Microsoft has expressed its ambition to surpass the PS6 in terms of hardware capabilities, all while gradually expanding its software to multiple platforms. However, in a recent interview with Videogamer, Seamus Blackley, the creator of Xbox, argued that the real key to selling consoles lies in offering unique content, as advancements in technology reach a point of diminishing returns.
Blackley recalled the impact of Gran Turismo on the PS1, a game so visually impressive that it compelled him to buy the console. He noted that today’s graphics no longer have that same wow factor. “There’s no more graphics that make you feel that way,” he reflected.
He emphasized that the real challenge now for console makers is to create exclusive experiences that consumers can’t get anywhere else. “To win, you have to create something so compelling that when people see it, they feel they must have it,” he said. “Because what you’re really asking is for them to spend hundreds of dollars on a console to play a $70 game.”
Blackley, who left Xbox in 2002, made it clear that he distanced himself from the current direction of the brand. “How they managed that brand and the story going forward is not my fault,” he remarked. “I wouldn’t have done things the same way. I don’t know if it would have been more or less successful, but I certainly think that the focus on raw power today isn’t helpful.”
